Dear friends who are runners:

Please oh please tell me how to become one of you. I'm dying here with my inability to complete a full mile. I've tried and failed numerous times. I've tried various types of shoes. I've stretched and even given myself the mental ability to know that it is going to take time to build up to running a solid straight mile. I don't know what I'm missing, since everyone that runs tells me that you have to stick with it and anyone can be a runner.

I beg to differ.
Sincerely,
Jordanne

I have been dying to put in my two cents about running for ages! I have a double shortage of strength and coordination and, therefore, am not athletic - but I have learned to run.
Here's my advice.
In order of importance:
1. Slow down. Go so slow that someone could walk beside you.
2. Start short. 10 mins tops.
3. Be kind. Don't degrade yourself.
4. Breathe - remember to exhale.
5. Relax - hands, face, shoulders.
6. Run in pretty places
7. With an ipod
8. At dusk

I don't think shoes or stretching matters until you start going long distances.

Don't run with somebody who is fast. It will leave you feeling demoralized.
